About Us

American Medical Overseas Relief (AMOR) is dedicated to improving the health of people in impoverished areas of the Middle East. We focus on maternal and newborn care, children’s health, trauma and urgent care, and health and hygiene education.

AMOR grew out of one family’s vision and generosity. The Assemi family of Fresno, California, funded the development of a medical clinic in Kabul, Afghanistan. In collaboration with local and national leaders and the governments of Afghanistan and the United States, the medical clinic turned into a hospital with 85 beds. Afshar Hospital opened its doors in April, 2009, and began serving approximately 40,000 extremely poor people who previously had no access to medical care.

With the successful opening of Afshar Hospital, AMOR’s vision and desire for the future is to help a hospital in Karbala, Iraq obtain proper medical supplies; as well as to build a hospital from the ground up in Armenia. The humanitarian mission that began in Fresno has expanded into an international effort to make healthcare available to people who live in absolute poverty and die of diseases that could easily be prevented or cured.

To keep Afshar Hospital’s doors open and fund the development of additional hospitals, AMOR is working to build a strong donor base nationally and internationally. With your support, AMOR will continue providing healthcare to those who are most in need.

AMOR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation.
