For Afghanistan, the World Health Organization reports some of the worst health conditions in history. The life expectancy for people in Afghanistan is half what it would be in other countries due to decades of war, political turmoil, natural disasters, and severe poverty. A few examples of these conditions are:
* 40% of children in Afghanistan die before age 5 of treatable and preventable childhood illnesses.
* 1 in 4 women die in childbirth.
